II. Kabanata VI: My Broadcasting Guide

Updated: Oct 21, 2021

I never participated in any journalism-related contests throughout my junior high school years since I never pictured myself as a journalist or in any other media-related job. Communication was not one of my top choices. Still, when summer vacation came around in 2018, I was undecided about which strand to enroll in for senior high, so I prayed to God and asked for a sign. I happened to be watching a lot of Kdrama where the main characters' jobs were related to journalism like Pinocchio (2014) by Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye, While you were Sleeping (2017) of Lee Jong Suk and Bae Suzy, and Healer (2014-2015) by Ji Chang Wook and Park Min Young. I took that as a sign to get into this industry because I discovered that my skills might be fully utilized and that I was eager to understand how reporters, journalists, and broadcasters conduct their jobs.

When I tried recording myself and applying the principles I'd learned to have a broadcaster voice, I had difficulty accomplishing two things. First and foremost, my intonation. I don't know when to halt my lines at first, so it appears like I'm rapping or that I'm rushing into something, and I'm always out of breath. Second, there are some words that I am unable to speak correctly, particularly in Tagalog terms, and I have difficulty pronouncing words with lots of the letter R. However, making my voice appropriate for broadcasting was very easy for me. I practiced delivering lines on Tiktok since there were videos posted by 24 Oras that can be a duet if you want and an aspiring media practitioner.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience. I became aware of the areas in which I need to improve in the following days. Practicing will help my improvement; it may not lead to perfection, but the vital point is that I am learning and growing better every day. There is no such thing as perfection since every day is a fresh opportunity to learn and grow.
